Teh tarik at home: how to make Nona Teh Tarik taste like the mamak stall

Teh tarik is Malaysia's national drink: strong black tea with condensed milk, "pulled" between two cups until it is frothy. The pulling is theatre, but it also cools the tea and creates the foam. With a premix you can get close at home in two minutes.
What you need
- One sachet of Nona Teh Tarik Original, or Nona Teh Tarik Halia if you like the warming ginger version.
- About 180 ml of water just off the boil.
- Two mugs with a bit of height.
Steps
1. Empty the sachet into mug one and add the hot water. Stir until fully dissolved.
2. Pour the tea into mug two from as high as you comfortably can — start low, then raise your pouring hand as the stream steadies.
3. Pour it back. Repeat four to six times. The foam builds with each pull.
4. Serve immediately, foam on top.
Tips
- Don't use a full mug of water. Teh tarik is small and strong; too much water makes it watery.
- For teh tarik peng (iced): use 120 ml hot water, pull, then pour over a glass of ice.
- The halia version is popular on rainy days and as an after-dinner drink — the ginger is mild, not fiery.
- Pair with a packet of Nut King salted peanuts for the full kopitiam feeling.
Both Nona varieties are available on our Shopee store or by WhatsApp with island-wide delivery.
