Penang lime juice and asam limau kasturi: Malaysian drinks for hot Singapore afternoons

Singapore afternoons call for something cold and sour. These three Malaysian drinks are what you get at a hawker centre, in a form you can keep at home.
My Juice Penang Lime Juice
A Penang-style lime concentrate: sharp, fragrant and slightly sweet. Mix one part juice with about four to five parts cold water and plenty of ice. A pinch of salt or a sour plum turns it into the classic hawker version.
Hicomi Lime Juice
Another Malaysian lime concentrate, a little rounder and less sharp than the Penang style. Dilute to taste with cold water — kids usually prefer this one.
Jus Asam Limau Kasturi (sour plum calamansi)
Calamansi lime with sour plum in single-serve sachets — the drink Malaysians order with nasi lemak. Salty-sour-sweet; stir a sachet into cold water, or into sparkling water for a kopitiam "soda" version.
Mixing ideas
- Lime teh: brew BOH Teh Wangi Ros, cool it, add Penang lime and ice.
- Lime with mint: muddle a few mint leaves in the glass before adding the juice.
- Lime slushie: blend the mixed drink with ice for ten seconds.
Some of these go out of stock between batches — if a listing shows "Restocking", pre-order and we will deliver when the next batch lands.
