Kapal Api Kopi Gula Melaka and Oriental Kopi: two Malaysian coffees worth knowing

Kluang gets most of the attention, but two other packs on our shelf deserve a mention.
Kapal Api Kopi Gula Melaka
Kapal Api is a long-established Indonesian coffee brand, and this version is sweetened with gula melaka — palm sugar — instead of white sugar. The result is a darker, caramel-edged sweetness that works especially well iced. If you like kopi but find 3-in-1 sticks one-dimensional, try this.
- Brew with 150 ml hot water; for iced, use less water and more ice.
- Pairs with Jiraporn dried bananas — the palm sugar and banana echo each other.
Oriental Kopi White Coffee Classic
Oriental Kopi is the Malaysian kopitiam chain known for its queues and its egg tarts; its retail white coffee premix brings the café's signature cup home. Smooth, creamy and fragrant, slightly lighter than Kluang Mountain.
- A good "first white coffee" for someone who has never tried the Ipoh style.
- Makes a convincing kopi peng over ice.
Which to pick
- Sweet tooth, likes caramel notes → Kapal Api Gula Melaka.
- Smooth and creamy, café-style → Oriental Kopi.
- Traditional, stronger kopitiam flavour → Kluang Rail Coffee.
All three ship from Singapore with next-day delivery; see the Kopi & Teh collection for the full range.
